Wennmacher steps in to spark North's win

BELVIDERE — Some teams might worry if their starting quarterback was out with an injury. Not Belvidere North.

With Keith Larson unavailable because of a leg injury suffered last week in a loss to Harlem, the Blue Thunder turned to Corey Wennmacher, the starting quarterback last season. Before Larson's injury, the plan was for Wennmacher to play more wide receiver and free safety this year.

Wennmacher looked more than comfortable at his old position in a 29-6 win over Guilford on Friday night at Funderburg Stadium. The 6-foot senior amassed more than 300 yards of total offense, rushing for two touchdowns and throwing for two more.

"It wasn't just me," a humble Wennmacher said after the game. "That was the best game our offensive line has played. Anyone could have done what I did out there."

Wennmacher was intercepted on the game's first series on a diving catch by Guilford's Zane Gilfillan at the North 20. But the Vikings couldn't capitalize, and Wennmacher quickly regrouped on the next drive when he outran the entire Guilford defense for a 96-yard score.

"That took away the momentum," North coach Curt Tobin said.

Wennmacher threw two TDs in the second quarter on passes to Jake Billon (9 yards) and Alex Tripp (27 yards). Tripp's TD came with no time left on the clock to give North a 19-0 lead at halftime. Wennmacher finished the first half with 145 yards rushing. For the game, he had 17 carries for 178 yards and completed 14-for-20 passes for 140 yards.

"He was ridiculous," said wide receiver Tyler Nelson. "That was a (Freeport) Wes Gastel-type performance."

"It sounds trite but no one works harder than Corey," Tobin said. "He was one of the players who were at every workout last spring and summer. He deserves this."

Guilford stumbled all night long. The Vikings (0-2) finished with 118 total yards of offense and fumbled three times. Jeff Janusevic, who rushed for 90 yards last week against Boylan, was stymied by the Thunder's new 3-5 defense as he was held to no yards rushing on six carries. "Our defense came of age tonight," Tobin said.

North (1-1) added to its lead in the fourth quarter thanks to a 30-yard field goal by Lauren Waddell and a 5-yard run by Wennmacher.

The Vikings finally scored their first points of the season late in the game on a three-yard run by Albert Porter. Gilfillan led the Vikings with 18 carries for 64 yards.
