ROCKFORD — Jeff Janusevic overcome a muddy field and a scrappy East defense to guide Guilford to a 20-0 victory Friday.
The Vikings learn tonight if their 5-4 record is good enough for a playoff berth.
“It was a good time,” said Janusevic, who threw for one touchdown and ran for another. “It was a lot of fun slipping and sliding around here tonight.”
The senior quarterback hit Avery Sherman with a 13-yard TD pass with 41 seconds left in the half to break a scoreless tie.
After Zane Gilfillan ran for a 1-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, Janusevic scored on a fourth-and-goal run from the 4.
“We just wanted to come out, get the W and get in the playoff,” said Janusevic, who rushed for 89 yards, completed three of five passes for 37 yards and returned a punt 43 yards.
East’s best scoring threat was a 15-play, seven-minute drive that ended early in the second quarter at the Guilford 31.
“We were able to move the ball, but then we would have breakdowns of key positions here and there,” East coach Jeff Matzl. “We just couldn’t keep the momentum going.”
The loss ended the season for East (2-7) and Matzl’s seven-year head coaching career at the school.
Matzl told the team of his decision after the game. He decided before the season this would be his final year.
“We played teams tough week after week,” he said. “Knowing we were playing undermanned with 20 to 25 guys, we still were producing a great effort on the field and working hard.”
