OREGON - In a game plagued by fumbles and slippery field conditions, Oregon needed a field goal in double overtime to edge Hampshire 11-8.
After Hampshire failed to convert on a fourth-down play in the second overtime, Jeff Yount kicked a fourth-down 22-yard field goal for the Hawk win.
"The longer the game went, I had a feeling it was going to come down to a field goal or extra point,"
Yount said.
Yount's kick was dead center off the hold of Ryan McWethy, who moments earlier scored a touchdown and extra point in the first overtime for Oregon.
"It was a classic high school football game," Hampshire coach Dan Cavanaugh. "It's a shame one team had to lose."
Quarterback Evan Brenner tied the game for Hampshire with a fourth-down pass play and extra point pass.
"For a good part of the game, I thought Hampshire was mentally and physically tougher," Oregon coach John Bothe said. "Tonight, every piece of turf was precious."
"It proved we can't take anyone lightly," McWethy said.
Hawk star running back/linebacker Nick Snyder suffered an abdominal injury in the first half, but was able to return to snap on Yount's winning kick.
"It was a perfect snap by Nick and a perfect kick by Yount," McWethy said. "And, the middle of the line did a great job."
