Milledgville escapes with OT win over Polo

MILLEDGEVILLE — Polo needed a touchdown and 2-point conversion to force overtime. The Marcos got it. Once. But they couldn’t repeat the feat in overtime, and Milledgeville escaped with a 24-22 NUIC Upstate football victory Friday night.

Matt Scholl completed his only pass, a 27-yarder to Connor Lincoln, to force overtime after he added the 2-point conversion run. Kirk Engelkens, who earlier ran for TDs of 26 and 13 yards, put Milledgeville (2-0) ahead in overtime with a 12-yard pass to Nate Ebersole. He then passed for the 2-point conversion.

Polo (1-1) answered with a 10-yard run by Matt VanOosten, but the 2-point pass try failed.

Milledgeville outgained Polo 295 yards to 197. Engelkens passed for 65 yards and ran for 63. Greg Fredericks added 76 yards rushing for the Missiles and Jake Workman 61.

VanOosten had 69 yards on 12 carries for Polo, including the Marcos first touchdown on an 11-yard run. Scholl passed for the 2-point conversion.
