STOCKTON - Cody Gallagher ran for 157 yards on 19 carries and Aaron Schmelzle had 125 yards on 14 carries to lead Freeport Aquin.
Stockton took an early 6-0 lead. The Blackhawks held Aquin on its first drive, then scored on a Myles Zueger quarterback keeper.
It looked as if the Blackhawks might keep their lead when they held on third down on Aquin’s next possession, only to let an offside penalty on the next play keep the Bulldogs’ drive alive.
Aquin (4-3, 4-3 NUIC Upstate) completed that drive with a 5-yard pass from Jordan Pontius (4-for-6 for 42 yards, one touchdown) to Aaron Schmelzle (two catches for 20 yards). The Bulldogs offense scored every time it got the ball the rest of the night.
Stockton kept competing hard, but could never seem to put four good defensive plays in a row together. Repeatedly the Blackhawks would do well on first and second downs and hold Aquin to short gains or none at all. But a slip by a defender or a missed assignment on third down let the Bulldogs get the necessary yardage to move the chains.
