Galena holds off Marcos

GALENA — It wasn’t pretty, but for Galena, it was good enough.

At times Friday night, the Pirates (8-1, 7-1 in the NUIC-Upstate) were their own worst enemy, incurring killer penalties and committing a big turnover in the red zone.

But in the end, Galena was good enough, topping Polo 21-7.

“I thought we shot themselves in the foot a couple times,” Galena coach Ed Freed said. “But Polo’s a good team, and they’re going to do that to teams.”

Galena scored early on a Matt Hillard 6-yard run, but Polo tied the game on a 76-yard drive in the second quarter. The Pirates took the lead just before halftime on a 30-yard TD pass from Mitchell Phillips to Tyler DeLoach.

“That was a big play right before the half,” Freed said. “Mitchell made a nice throw and hit Tyler in stride to give us back some momentum.”

The game would remain 14-7 until the third quarter when Phillips kept the ball for a 5-yard TD run.

“Getting up two scores in high school football is always big,” Freed said. “We were able to make them have to go away from what they do best.

Their quarterback, (Matt) Scholl is a great, great player.”
