Dakota 33, Lena-Winslow 25

Dakota 33, Lena-Winslow 25: The Dakota girls basketball team didn’t flinch.

Lena-Winslow had just taken a one-point lead with 6:33 to go, and the top-seeded, one-loss Indians were in danger of getting upset at home and having their hopes of a deep postseason run end.

But the Indians took the lead right back on the next possession on a Brianne Boals basket and ended the game on an 11-2 run to beat fourth-seeded Lena-Winslow 33-25 on Wednesday.

“Despite a lot of parents probably sitting on their hands, really nervous, we never lost our composure,” said Dakota coach Kevin Cline, who said that composure and intelligence are his team’s best attributes. “You look at the girls’ faces, and I don’t think they ever looked worried.”

Dakota struggled offensively all game long. Le-Win didn’t play its typical man-to-man, switching between a triangle-and-two and box-and-one defense to slow Dakota down.

“We mixed in some zone early, and we played some junk just to keep them on their toes,” Lena-Winslow coach Kyle Benson said. “Our kids did a great job, I’m really proud of them. They did everything they could.”

The Panthers defense shut the Indians down for the most part. Dakota missed layups and open perimeter shots in what was a very cold shooting first half. The lone exception was forward Mikaela Schroeder. When everyone else was misfiring, Schroeder came out hot, scoring eight of Dakota’s first 11 points.
