Cardinals survive scare with fourth-quarter surge

WINNEBAGO - Stillman Valley scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to survive a scare and walk away with a 34-24 win at Winnebago Friday.

The state-ranked Cardinals (7-0, 3-0 Big Northern West) trailed Winnebago (2-5, 0-3) 21-15 at halftime but outscored Winnebago 19-3 in the second half for the win.

This was the closest game of the season for Stillman Valley, which was ranked sixth in Class 4A this week. Winnebago scored first on a 4-yard run by Seth Gustafson, but Stillman Valley answered with a 24-yard run by Cody Brewington and the Cardinals led 8-7 after the first quarter.

Winnebago scored twice in the second on a 6-yard run by Gustafson and a 14-yard pass from Jeff Sartorius to A.J. Thomas. The Cardinals added a 1-yard run by Shawn Cox, and Winnebago led by six at the break. Stillman Valley pulled away in the fourth on two 27-yard runs by Brewington and a 27-yard run by Shay Bubnack and held Winnebago to a 21-yard Joe Snyder field goal.

Shawn Cox led Stillman Valley with 113 yards on 25 carries, and Gustafson finished with 127 yards on 29 rushes for the Indians.
