Annawan 66, Milledgeville 46

Annawan 66, Milledgeville 46: Annawan coach Ryan Brown had a simple game plan coming into the Eastland Regional championship game — don’t let Milledgeville scorer Kirk Engelkens beat him.

With a game plan that was executed perfectly, Engelkens and the Missiles couldn’t beat the Braves as Annawan won, 66-46.

“We knew what we wanted to do, we put it in and the kids executed perfectly,” Brown said. “I can’t credit our guys enough; they did everything we asked.”

The Braves used a 1-3-1 half court zone that prevented Engelkens from getting to the basket, or finding open looks.

“Kirk’s a great player, and if he was going to get to the bucket, he was going to have to get through three guys,” Brown said. “It was the same thing on the perimeter; he was going to have to shoot over someone.”

Engelkens still finished with a team-high 18 points. Levi Harris followed with 16 points.

Alex Coppejans poured in four 3-pointers and finished with 29 points for Annawan.

“It’s going to be a tough group of seniors to replace,” Milledgeville coach Brian Rahn said.
