DURAND — A dominating ground game and stifling defense helped Stockton record its first victory of the season Friday, beating Durand 35-10.
The Blackhawks rolled up 347 yards and were led by running back Jordan Arand, who carried 28 times for 192 yards.
On its opening drive of the game, Stockton used a 42-yard kickoff return by Brock Hawley to establish field position, then paired two first downs to set up the first score of the game.
Running back Brandon Wampfler burst 3 yards through the middle for the touchdown, and the two-point conversion failed.
On its next possession, the Blackhawks marched 60 yards and opened the second quarter with a touchdown run, again by Wampfler, who literally placed the football on the endline at the end of a short sideline sweep.
Quarterback Grant Pierce connected with Wampfler on the two-point conversion for a 14-0 lead.
Durand came out for the second half ready to catch up and had clearly made an adjustment in its offense. Quarterback Bob Sweet connected on six consecutive passes, and the Bulldogs cut Stockton’s lead in half on a 7-yard pass to Cody Northrup, then a Sweet extra point, for a 14-7 score.
Stockton went back to its power game on the next possession, driving 65 yards and capping the effort with a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Niles Zueger.
Arand scored in the fourth quarter, finishing a 70-yard drive with a 2-yard punch into the end zone.
Brandon Westaby ran in the two-point conversion for a 28-7 score at the 4:30 mark.
