Morman passes Titans past Libertyville for first-round win

ROCKFORD — Boylan couldn’t run.

Backup quarterback Michael Morman made sure the Titans didn’t have to Saturday.

Morman completed 11-of-16 passes for 166 yards and three touchdowns in Boylan’s 24-14 first-round Class 7A football playoff win over Libertyville.

“Michael played the best game of his career,” said Will Sahlstrom, who caught four passes for 95 yards, including TDs of 21 and 39 yards from Morman.

Morman, who threw for 189 yards in four previous starts in place of injured Zach Lane, passed the credit to his teammates.

“The pressure is not on me,” he said. “It’s the line. The line giving me time makes every pass easy.”

Libertyville (5-5) which lost all its games by 10 points or fewer, gave Boylan (10-0) fits. The Wildcats opened the game with consecutive gains of 13, 12 and 11 yards, then tied it 7-7 with a 65-yard drive on their second possession. But Boylan regrouped, held the Wildcats to 178 yards rushing on 39 carries and intercepted three passes, two by Jacob Ghinazzi and one by Ryan Knodle.

“We adjusted and got it done,” linebacker Justin Janicke said.

The Titans held Libertyville scoreless on three drives it started inside the 50. And Boylan finally started running late. Sahlstrom’s 22-yard gain on third-and-16 and punishing runs of 13, 10 and 13 yards by Matt McCrudden and Sahlstrom helped Morman kick an insurance field goal with 30 seconds left.

“That was the best drive of the season for us,” Sahlstrom said.

Boylan always had faith in Morman, who also ran for a team-high 54 yards.

“At the start of the season, we were planning on him playing receiver, defensive back, punting and kicking and driving the bus for us on Sundays,” coach Dan Appino said. “He can do a lot of things well.”

Boylan wasn’t worried about the close call.

“This was definitely a big gut-check,” Appino said. “We told our kids we’d have to grind our way through. That’s OK. That’s what Lake Zurich did on their way to the state championship last year. Every game went down to the wire.

“You develop character and hardness when you play like that. I’m hoping our kids will continue that next week (when Boylan hosts 8-2 Crystal Lake South).”
